In the workshop Dr Meesha Warmington and Babbel (a language app company) explored the cognitive benefits of bilingualism and language-learning. As part of the session Dr Warmington examined the growing body of evidence that demonstrates the potential health and wellbeing applications of language-learning.
More than half of the world’s population is bilingual, with over 300 languages spoken in homes just in England. This richness in linguistic diversity not only adds to the socio-cultural tapestry, but has implications for our understanding of neurological and cognitive development. Indeed research has shown that bilingualism has many health, psychological and lifestyle advantages. Yet, potential implications of bilingualism are overshadowed by limited understanding beyond research communities regarding its impact on cognition and learning.
