To watch the film and live discussion, please return to this page at the time listed above.

In this film screening and lively discussion, Chair of Sustainable Design Professor Fionn Stevenson talks with colleagues Fernando Gareffa and Simone Villa in Uberlândia, Brazil about their work on the ground with communities and international researchers to use citizen science to make home environments more resilient to disease.

What can the UK learn about disease prevention and climate change from our colleagues and communities in Brazil? Dengue, Zyka and Chikungunya are dangerous viruses transmitted by certain species of mosquito. According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, 1.4 million people were infected in 2019 causing over 400 deaths. Studies show that the proliferation of the mosquito is correlated to the accumulation of waste and standing water in domestic backyards. Most cases occur in social housing developments. Climate change is exacerbating the situation, with increased rainfall and temperatures.
